Tips on Pond Care

Maintaining your pond is not difficult, but you must pay attention to its condition to keep it looking beautiful. Watch this page for important tips and hints on keeping your pond or water feature beautiful.

Annual Maintenance Schedule

April - May
Spring cleaning time! Time to clear away those dead leaves and spruce up the rocks and prepare the bogs for planting or regrowth. Check your fish for lesions or signs of poor health. If needed, divide your plants and water lillies.

June - July
Routine maintenance, including removal of leaves and debris; empty the skimmer box of matter; clean filter mat; check bog plants and reposition, if necessary. Physically remove algae and treat to keep the algae growth under control.

August - September
Continuation of routine maintenance, treatment and harvesting of string algae. This is now a good time to add tropical blooming plants.

October - November
Watch for leaf drop and empty skimmer box more frequently in addition to regular cleaning. Algae growth has slowed or stopped, so algae treatment now stops. For winterization, depending on your pond, you may or may not want to shut the pond down and stop the water flow.

December - January
Ice formations are beautiful but break up any ice dams along the streams of your water garden that may divert the water out of the pond. Do not, however, break the ice over the open pond because it is traumatic to the fish. As long as the water continues to flow well, leave the ice alone.

February - March
Add rock salt to the pond to improve fish health over the winter. Generally speaking, you add 3 lbs per 100 gallons of water. Continue to check the skimmer box for leaf and debris catch and empty as necessary.
